There are people in the world who live with some type of ulcer. Many of these ulcers can be found in the stomach or the duodenum. The duodenum is the first part of the small intestine. Any ulcer that is found in the duodenum is called duodenal ulcers. The ulcer that is found in the stomach is known as gastric ulcer.

These gastric ulcers are not of a cancerous nature. They are caused by an imbalance that happens between the stomach acid and the natural immune system of the stomach's lining. The imbalance between pepsin, which is the stomach acid, and the immunity system causes an inflammation in the lining of the stomach.

This inflammation can be made much worse by your taking medications like aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications. These NSAIDs can be drugs like ibuprofen. The other reasons for getting gastric ulcers are infections that are caused by the H.pylori bacteria and stomach cancers.

H. pylori causes about 7 out of 10 cases of gastric ulcers. These bacteria affect the stomach lining and this allows the stomach acids to causes inflammations and gastric ulcers. There are other causes that lead to gastric ulcers being formed. These however are rare.

For instance gastric ulcers can be formed from various virus infections. Crohn’s disease can cause gastric ulcers as well as a host of other problems. Stomach cancer which looks very much like gastric ulcers may be present if you are found to have a gastric ulcer. However this particular scenario does not always occur therefore you will have to consult your doctor and see if you have stomach cancer or gastric ulcers.

The symptoms of gastric ulcer include abdominal pain. This pain can wake you up at night. You can relieve this nighttime pain by drinking milk or taking antacids. There is a strong chance that you gastric ulcer pain may occur about 2 to 3 hours after you have eaten. Sometimes however this pain can become worse if you don’t eat anything.

Nausea and abdominal indigestion are the other symptoms of gastric ulcers. Vomiting and especially vomiting blood are other serious symptoms of gastric ulcers. You should be aware that sometimes the symptoms of gastric ulcers include blood in your stools or having black and tarry stools. There can also be unintentional weight loss and fatigue is also another types of gastric ulcer symptoms.
